There has been many significant movements concerning African Americans' fight to attain civil rights. These movement have redefined the concept of civil rights and the government's roles with them. Many prominent African American leaders rose with this era, such as Malcolm X and Rosa Parks- risking, and in some cases, sacrificing their lives to the civil rights cause. The Civil Rights movement left a permanent mark on American history. The development of the Civil Rights was an effort to end racial discrimination and segregation (involving 'Jim Crow' laws; the term "separate but equal" was commonly used).
Civil Rights Movement With Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a minister. He had a powerful voice and he guided many demonstrations in the Civil Rights Movement. He delivered his famous "I have a Dream Speech" where he envisioned a world where people were no longer divided by race. He was so powerful in the movement that Congress enacted the Civil Rights Act in 1964. Martin Luther King Jr. was honored with the Nobel Peace Price and with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Martin Luther King Jr. is an icon of the movement and his life's work for nondiscrimination left a major impact on the world.
